Marijuana - Know the Facts
In 2016, voters in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts passed a law (Ballot Measure #4) making it legal for adults 21 years of age and older to possess and use small amounts of marijuana.
What does that mean for the University of Massachusetts Amherst?
UMass Amherst is committed to maintaining the health and safety of everyone in our campus community. Although Massachusetts voters have approved a ballot measure permitting the possession and recreational use of marijuana, federal laws prohibit the use, possession and/or cultivation of marijuana at educational institutions. The use, possession, or cultivation of marijuana in any form is therefore not allowed in any university housing, on any other university property, or at university sponsored off-campus events.
Standards of Conduct
Please take time to familiarize yourself with the policies and information found in the Code of Student Conduct, and Residential Life Community Living Standards and note these policy points:
The use, possession, or growing of marijuana is not allowed on the UMass Amherst campus, on any other university property, or at university sponsored off campus events.
Possession of marijuana paraphernalia is not allowed on the UMass Amherst campus, on any other university property, or at university sponsored off campus events.
Using marijuana at UMass Amherst is a sanctionable violation of the Code of Conduct. UMass Amherst Police Department, Residential Life staff, and other university officials will continue to enforce the campus-wide prohibition of marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia.
UMass Amherst is committed to maintaining the health and safety of everyone in our campus community. High-risk drinking, marijuana, and illegal drug use increase the risk of negative health consequences and undermine university goals for wellness and academic success. UMass offers several campus resources that provide support and address concerns around alcohol, marijuana, and drug use.
